Biography

Joanne is an academic GP - a non-principal in a busy inner city Liverpool Practice and an Associate Professor at Warwick University. She leads an international collaboration (the School for Advancing Generalist Expertise, SAGE) to develop, implement and evaluate the provision of expert generalist practice. She is also recent past Chair of the Society for Academic Primary Care, SAPC. Joanne studied medicine at Liverpool University and trained as a GP before beginning a career in public health. Here her research interests were sparked by a recognition of health services as a key social determinant of health. She moved back into front-line General Practice and began to study enablers and barriers to the provision of individually tailored care as a core component of quality primary care. Joanne was awarded a Department of Health funded doctoral fellowship to start this work (2003-06). Following an NIHR clinical lectureship at Manchester, she successfully applied for an NIHR Clinician Scientist award to establish an original body of research into the complex intervention that is expert generalist practice. She uses mixed methods and action research approaches, underpinned by an emphasis on collaborative research across disciplines and settings, to develop, deliver and evaluate new complex interventions. Her work is internationally recognised, and supports a number of projects both in progress and in preparation. Joanne's work to improve generalist practice crosses in to her teaching, at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Including teaching in evidence-practice, critical thinking, and research methodology. In addition to leadership within her own field of research, she offers strategic leadership to the wider discipline through her role as recent past Chair of the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC). Joanne has a broad portfolio of work, but with a core focus on improving person-centred primary care through collaborative scholarship. She welcomes contact from students interested in projects in these areas.
