    BACKGROUND

John Powell is Professor of Public Health Medicine at the University of Warwick, and Clinical Director of NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk), the NHS website. He has a particular interest in ehealth and the use of information and communication technology to improve health and health services, and a broad interest in health communication and knowledge management. His previous academic appointments were at the University of Southampton, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Oxford. He has degrees in Social and Political Sciences and Clinical Medicine from the University of Cambridge. He trained in Psychiatry in Oxford, where he worked with the NHS Centre for Evidence-Based Mental Health. He trained in Public Health Medicine in the Oxford region. He has an MSc and a PhD from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

His current projects are in three main areas: (1) evaluating the effectiveness of ehealth tools (for example a randomised trial of an internet-based intervention to promote mental wellbeing; and a randomised trial of an internet intervention for cardiac rehabilitation); (2) investigating how a connected health world is changing how patients and the public interact with health services and manage their own health (for example a study examining patient to patient interactions online; and a study examining how young people, 'digital natives' are engaging with health care in new ways); (3) investigating how health service managers make decisions (for example a study of how NHS commissioning decisions are made; and a study of how NHS Chief Executives make decisions).

He has a strong interest in the public understanding of medicine. For example, a recent Wellcome funded television project on the life of Dr John Snow. He has also worked as a medical advisor to television programmes including "Casualty 1909" (BBC1), "Spanish Flu - The Forgotten Fallen" (BBC4) and "Downton Abbey" (ITV1). He has been interviewed on BBC Breakfast, the BBC News channel, BBC Radio 4, and by Nature, the Economist, and the major national newspapers.
