MD962: Essentials of Clinical Education

Aim
The aim of this module is to enable students to begin to develop their understanding of education in the field of clinical practice, and to begin to apply that understanding in the workplace. It is intended to be the introductory module to the Masters, and is designed to build the foundations on which other modules can build.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of key theories regarding how students learn with particular reference to clinical settings and the education and training needs of professionals within the NHS
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role and professional values of the clinician educator
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of Information technology to support learning
- Demonstrate a critical, questioning and analytical approach to key theories and research
- Demonstrate effective planning for, and use of, at least one of the following educational approaches with particular reference to their subject area and to the level of the target student audience
- Large group presentation
- Seminar/small group teaching
- One-to-one teaching - planned and opportunistic
- Demonstrate the ability to assess and give feedback to students
- Evaluate (describe, analyse and justify) their own practice as a clinical teacher and demonstrate the ability to respond effectively to evaluative criticism of teaching
- Demonstrate personal development planning as a clinician educator
HEA Accreditation
Recently we achieved HEA accreditation for this module. All candidates completing this portfolio successfully will be recognised as Associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Meeting the requirements of the Higher Education Academy
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) offers a ‘Professional Recognition Scheme’ leading to Associateship or Fellowship of the Academy. This is a qualification that is recognised across universities and therefore can provide you with transferable recognition of your expertise and commitment as a teacher. Assessment
Assessment will be based on a “Teaching Portfolio” comprising 7 key tasks. Detailed guidance on these will be provided during the module.
Task 1 - Teaching Observations: Two teaching Observations with reflective comments (one as teacher, one as observer). A modification of an existing observation template will be used to illustrate text (500 words, each observation).
Task 2 - Giving Feedback: Reflective Comments on giving feedback to students on at least 3 occasions (using a modified Pendleton or similar tool, total 500 words).
Task 3- Using Feedback: Evidence of using feedback from students to as part of quality assurance and to improve quality of teaching to enhance learning (500 words).
Task 4 - Ensuring Effective Learning: Lesson plan. This should include an explanatory account demonstrating that the candidate understands how students can learn most effectively in clinical settings, reflecting on previous interventions and providing new action comments (500 words).
Task 5 - Review Learning Event: A review of a learning event, with a particular focus on the appropriate use of technology to enhance learning (500 words).
Task 6 - Reflective Overview: A reflective overview of the candidate’s academic and professional practice which demonstrates commitment to the HEA Professional Values Statements (1500 words).
