Essentials in Primary Care

This module is only available as a Post Graduate Award and will help healthcare professionals develop and enhance knowledge, skills and understanding in the essentials which lie at the heart of primary care, including:

  • Ethics
  • Patient safety and quality of care
  • Communication and consultation skills
  • Preventing premature deaths
  • Population health

This bespoke programme takes a fresh look at key challenges in front-line practice. We will take a distinct primary care approach to understand the problem, so that you leave with practical new ideas that you can take back to your own workplace setting. It is delivered by researchers undertaking innovative work in each of the areas covered, along with leading educators from Warwick Medical School.

Module Content:

The module will explore tackling problematic polypharmacy in which you will take a critical look at a new Generalist model of Prescribing. You will also apply principles of patient safety and quality improvement to think about how we can improve prescribing practice. From this you will leave with practical ideas for improving your own practice; and skills in audit and improvement methodology.

You will look at improving palliative care in the primary care setting in which we will consider how ethical principles can help us deal with the challenges of providing high quality palliative care. We will also work together to rethink a core tool of primary care practice.

Drawing on recent research, including work led by Warwick Primary Care, we will use the example of mental health care to critically consider whether we do, in practice, deliver person-centred care.

We will also take a look at a key challenge for primary care – in balancing the needs of individuals and the wider population. We will look at key examples such as assessing cardiovascular risk, and pre-diabetes/Impaired Glucose Tolerance to take a critical look at risk reduction programmes

Assessment

The assignment will consist of a 4,000 word essay in which you will apply the critical ideas you have explored during the module to take a fresh critical look at an area of (your own) primary care practice.
