    CIDC/MDHCA Advanced Leaders Course

The CIDC/MDHCA Advanced Leaders Course trains healthcare professionals with established expertise in diabetes to facilitate and teach the University of Warwick assessed and accredited Certificate in Diabetes Care (CIDC) and Management of Diabetes in Hospital and Clinical Areas (MDHCA) courses in their local district. It is a two day residential programme held at the University of Warwick.

    About the Advanced Leaders Course

This leadership course is about facilitating change in the delivery of diabetes care in local areas. It prepares Advanced Leaders to motivate other people, deliver high quality multi-disciplinary education and achieve service improvement. Advanced Leaders learn about their role and responsibilities in planning, organising and assessing the teaching of the CIDC/MDHCA course in association with locally identified experts in diabetes and other relevant subjects.

    How does the course work?

Advanced Leaders attend a two-day residential Advanced Leadership Course at the University of Warwick. Two individuals are trained from one Primary/Secondary Care Organisation.

    Who can apply?

People suitable to apply for training as Advanced Leaders are Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Specialist Dietitians, Podiatrists and General Practitioners with special interest in the care and management of people with diabetes mellitus. A recognised teaching qualification is useful, but applicants must have experience of teaching.

They should also have the time, enthusiasm and personal commitment to run the programme within their own locality as this will involve some administration work. Advanced Leaders will need to undertake the marking of formative assessments and provide written feedback to their students and offer support/advice to students undertaking this course. Advanced Leaders will be assigned a Senior Teaching Fellow from the University of Warwick for the course they run, who can provide support via the telephone/email system.

    How do I apply?

Primary/Secondary Care Organisations interested in having Advanced Leaders trained should contact Warwick Medical School and speak to one of our Diabetes Course Co-ordinators.

    Advanced Leaders are expected to:

    • Be a skilled and credible practitioner
    • Have proven ability to facilitate, enable and support service developments
    • Be proactive in championing change and enlisting the help of others
