Integrated Clinical Academic Training (ICAT)
Integrated Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) is a key part in the development of research capacity in the UK and identifying talented and enthusiastic trainees at an early stage is the first step in training the next generation of clinical academics.
Foundation Clinical Academic Training Programme
Warwick provides Foundation Clinical Academic Training (FCAT) programmes across all of its Clinical Divisions. The Foundation Academic appointments run in parallel with the standard Foundation Doctor appointment process and each trainee is appointed to one of the Medical School’s partner NHS Trusts in the usual way. However, protected time will be provided for academic activities supported by clinical academics at University of Warwick.
Success is judged by completion of the NIHR-accredited Research Methods Training Programme and by the completion of a limited research project. Talented Foundation Clinical Academic Trainees will be encouraged to apply for Academic Clinical Fellowships.
The Academic Clinical Fellowhip Programme
Warwick provides Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) programmes in several clinical areas. Each ACF is appointed by one of the Medical School’s partner NHS Trusts but the academic support to the ACFs will be provided by clinical academics at University of Warwick.
Success is judged by the delivery of a funded PhD project at the end of the three year ACF. Progress of the current sixteen ACFs is monitored and supported by the Warwick ICAT Committee.
The Clinical Lectureship Programme
Warwick has several Clinical Lecturer (CL) posts in specialties with strong research track-records. These are University appointments but are funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
Success is judged by the delivery of a post-doctoral research programme with external grant awards. These posts are supported by the Warwick ICAT Committee.
