WMRFC Vs Warwick University Fresher XV
A determined medics team took to the field on a glorious Saturday afternoon looking to notch up the first win of the season against a younger and fitter side of Warwick Uni Freshers. Lead by a fired-up ‘Captain Baby’ the medic lads got stuck in straight from the off, with Evan ‘Throat-grabber’ Watts, Liam Kilbane and the rest of the forward pack dominating the rucks and mauls to win good ball and work it through the phases. It was a tight opening period though being played at a ferocious pace, and an offside decision gave the Uni Freshers the first chance to get three points on the board.
From the restart the medics began to dominate possession and gain yards on the pitch with superb tactical kicking from Tim Badcock at fly-half and some crashing runs from the centres (Craig ‘Grandpa’ Hickson and Andy ‘Sneds’ Hotchen). Solid work from the forwards bullying the Uni freshers in the scrum soon lead to a penalty, which scrum-half Dave Jones duly slotted to level the scores.

WMRFC Vs Nottingham Undergrads
On 8/10/11 the WMRFC machine geared up for our first NAMS match, in what promised to be a baptism of fire as we took on the team who had made it to the NAMS final 2 years running; Nottingham Undergraduates.
Confidence was high going into the match after a solid first half performance against Nottingham Postgraduates the previous week and a good warm up. WMRFC kicked off and immediately the Notts forwards started pounding through the middle and shipping the ball out wide for the backs to run.
Once again a solid defence kept Notts out of reach of the try line for a good 30 minutes despite them having almost entire possession of the ball. With 10 minutes to go in the first half a penalty was conceded within the 22 and Notts converted for a 3 – 0 lead.

WMRFC Vs Nottingham Grads
A new season has dawned on us and with it a much needed injection of fresh talent to boost the ageing WMRFC squad. Indeed there were a grand total of 20 who signed up at the fresher’s fair, and 8 of them even managed to make it to a training session. Things were looking good.
So after 2 weeks of contact training with Earlsdon RFC and match prep on the Tarkitt, a confident team took to the field against the Nottingham post-grads.
A solid pack got stuck in from the kick-off, retaining ball in the rucks and keen to show off the bosh. The cake loving front row, comprising of ‘Mr President’ Rich Le Cuirot, ‘Captain Baby’ and James‘punchy’ Webster made sure they displayed their power over the opposition, winning easily in the scrums; not least due to the aid of the new second rows Matt Ainsworth and Ayrton Goddard.
Superb tackling from Ed ‘Bundy’ Smith, Steve RT, and Craig Hickson amongst others kept the Nottingham attacking line at bay, but nevertheless we found ourselves stuck inside our own 22 for some time at the beginning of the first half. However, the determination and hard work in the tackles paid off: we turned over the ball and saw the first of several darting runs from Brevis and Sneds - who both sidestepped Notts’ players - taking the ball up into opposition territory. The scrums here continued to work as a home advantage and let our new 9 (Tim Badcock) and 10 (Dave Jones) link well to get the ball through the hands. On a number of occasions WMRFC came within inches of scoring, only to be denied by some great Nottingham defence.

A Message from You're Captains
We, the Captains, would like to welcome you to the WMRFC - a motley crew of has-beens and never-will-bes known as the Funboys. We play netball dressed as girls (and win!), tour in fine locations, and very occasionally play rugby.
Our club is proudly open and based on a couple of simple rules: Everyone is welcome and everyone who wants to play does so, whether battle hardened old timers or complete beginners. There is also plenty to be part of off the pitch; two tours, one guaranteed to be the best you’ll ever go on and another guaranteed to raise questions from your girlfriend (see 2010 tour to Brighton). There are plenty of socials throughout the year and it all climaxes in June with a match against the Old Boys and the Annual Dinner with some of our patrons; a surprisingly esteemed group of consultants. Throughout this social calendar there is a strong theme of charity, not only in aid of Liam’s love life, but also to raise money for charity, including the male cancer charity, Orchid, for whom we raised funds with the sale of our Really Useful Numbers Cards and an auction at the Dinner.
We train on Monday and Thursdays and try to have a match sorted for most Saturday’s. We play in the National Medical School league, and reached the final in the 2008-2009 season, an truly impressive feat. However we are normally happy enough if we beat Leicester in the Varsity match. We also play Wednesday night fixtures in the local 20:20 league, which we will enter as favourites, but which always offers a surprise - last year we played a begrudging police team the day after they had been battling student rioters at the University!
Medics rugby will, without doubt, add to your life at Warwick – providing a much-needed outlet from your studies and keeping you in contact with the students who were very recently in your shoes, who are more than happy to offer advice and support if you are struggling with any aspect of the course.
We cannot emphasize enough how welcome you all are, regardless of your abilities or experience, and we look forward to sharing a ruck and a pint with you.
Captain Ben Matthews and Vice-Captain Edward Smith
