Introduction
So you’re feeling rather smug?
Congratulations, you’re finally here! All those hours spent refreshing your email have finally paid off - you got the grades, you got the offer, you’ve made the cut, so huge congratulations. Now that’s over, and believe me, it’s over by the end of the first day, it’s time to get truthful. You are about to undertake the most stressful, toiling rollercoaster four years of your life. But we can guarantee you personally that you will enjoy every single second and you’re time here will go by in the blink of an eye, so grab every opportunity with both hands, hit the throttle and enjoy the ride. Of course you’re not expected to navigate the trials and tribulations of Medical School all on your own, MedSoc are on hand to ensure you let your hair down at least every other week and that your lovingly created undergraduate fancy dress costumes don’t go to waste.
So who is this wonderful MedSoc that you keep hearing about (Biased? Us?). The University of Warwick Medical Society (MedSoc) is led by a committee of students elected by the students each year, following an outrageous campaign period, in which all is fair in love and war. MedSoc is essentially here to provide entertainment and activities that prevent the cohort from contracting a bout of work-overload-sickness and burn-out-syndrome. Without sounding like your parents, it really is important that you take time out from medicine to relax and do something different; and that does not include just changing which library you’re working in. There’s a huge variety of societies affiliated with the Medical School that you can get involved in, further details can be found in this handbook.
Another invaluable source of support during your time here comes in the form of your medic ‘parent’. In your first week you will be paired with an older year, who you can exploit to your full advantage. They have the insider information which you are all yearning for, such the best places to party, the essential books you need and most importantly, access to their notes (please note the latter is subject to substantial bribery and copious amount of cake and/or Olympic tickets).
Welcome Week
But now to the bit we know you’re really interested in... your "freshers" week!
