DNA Diagnostics

Molecular diagnostics, used in rapid diagnosis and management of infectious and genetic diseases, have seen great advances over the past decades. These advances have been made possible by development of techniques for in vitro amplification of DNA such as the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Fundamental understanding of the processes involved is crucial to further improve reliability, specificity and efficiency.

Resurrecting the value of penicillin to treat superbug infections

Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered and has played an enormously important role in treating infections and saving lives over the past 60 years. This is all well and good, but there is a problem: antibiotic resistance, where bacteria acquire the ability to survive therapeutic administration of these chemical ‘magic bullets’. Bacteria effectively acquire their own bullet proof vests, or borrow them from other bacteria!
