"Quantum Mechanics and Computing in Physics, Mathematics and Biology"

Brandes (UMIST, Manchester)[Sponsored partially by funds from the EPSRC]Background and PurposeMany areas of science have entered a new era where microscopic and truely fundamental concepts like quantum mechanics plays a major role. The newly emerging field of `quantum information technology' describes activities that no longer can be associated with traditional subjects like mathematics or physics, but which is truely multidisciplinary. In fact, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists and even biologists have started to cross academic boundaries and form new collaborations, driven by the need to understand the quantum-mechanical level of their research. At the same time, there is a strong drive towards the exploitation of quantum effects for new purposes such as quantum information processing. This workshop has the purpose to bring together leading UK researchers in the area of quantum information processing (QIP) and computing for a one-day workshop. We plan to have 5-6 lectures in key areas of physics, mathematics and biology, where the combination of concepts from quantum theory, information theory, and computation have already started to lead to fruitful results. The workshop shall mainly address young researchers, PostDocs and postgraduate students who are currently working or intend to work in quantum mechanical or QIP related areas at the boundaries between the traditional natural sciences, mathematics, and computation. ProgrammeThe proposed workshop will bring together leading UK scientists. The lecturers in the following list are confirmed, their time slots are not.
Organisation, ResourcesParticipation shall be free of charge but be limited to about 30 participants. During the workshop, a light sandwich lunch as well as an afternoon tea shall be provided. Young scientists shall be able to contribute to the meeting by putting up posters. There is no conference fee, but there will be also no support for travel or accommodation. The workshop will start at 09:00 am with registration in room PS017 of the CSC. The CSC is located in the Physical Sciences Building (building 25), just next to the Physics building (building 24). Note that the university is located at the outskirts of Coventry and not in Warwick. In case you come by car, we should have reserved parking in car park 15 close to the CSC. The time available for the talks is 45-50 minutes and they should be understandable also to a non-specialist audience. A standard white board, an overhead projector and a computer projector will be available in the room. If you need anything else for your talk, please let us know. Poster presentations will be just outside room PS017 and we aim to have the poster boards up at 09:00 am in Friday morning and available until the end of the workshop.
