MIR@W-Day and CSC One-Day Workshop

Background and Purpose

Nearly fifty years have passed since Anderson's first suggestion of a disorder-induced metal-insulator transition (MIT), and yet the localization problem remains at the centre of much interest. Part of the allure of the localization problem is its near analytic intractability. Thus, while numerical results are plentiful and qualitative descriptions of the phenomenon are available, rigorous mathematical results, especially in more than one spatial dimension, are few. Furthermore, Anderson localization has an astonishing number of connections to other branches of mathematics and physics much beyond the original question of whether disordered systems conduct electricity. In mathematics, connections to the theory of random matrices have lately proven especially fruitful, whereas in physics, the challenge of classical wave localization such as in light or the interplay of many-body interactions and localization remain at the centre of much interest.

This workshop has the purpose to bring together leading researchers in the area of Anderson localization and random matrices for a one-day workshop. We plan to have 5-6 lectures in key areas of physics, mathematics and computing, where the combination of concepts from quantum theory, random Schrödinger operators, random matrix techniques and computation have already started to lead to fruitful results. The workshop shall mainly address young researchers, PostDocs and postgraduate students who are currently working or intend to work in localization related areas at the boundaries between the physics, mathematics, and computation.

Participants

Participation shall be free of charge but be limited to about 40 participants. During the workshop, a light sandwich lunch as well as an afternoon tea shall be provided. Young scientists shall be able to contribute to the meeting by putting up posters. There is no conference fee, but there will be also no support for travel or accommodation.

The symposium  will start at 09:30am at the University of Warwick. Note that the university is located at the outskirts of Coventry and not in Warwick. Venue

Registration will be held in the Common Room of the Mathematics Institute and all talks will be held in Lecture Room B3.02 of the Mathematics Institute. This is building 35 of the Warwick central campus.
