Intelligent and Adaptive Systems

The Intelligent and Adaptive Systems Research Group explores and develops innovative software technologies applied to areas which include the social and semantic web, education and educational technology, and human-computer integration. The defining characteristics of our systems include autonomy, self-awareness, learning ability, pattern recognition, risk and uncertainty management, skill development and refinement/optimisation and coalition formation. We employ and extend techniques and technologies such as ontological and rule-based reasoning, Bayesian networks, adaptive hypermedia, service-oriented and agent-based systems, machine learning and data mining, user and group modelling, empirical modelling, context modelling and prediction, quality of service management, design, and decision support.

Our current research focuses on three themes.

Educational Technology

We are interested in the use of software tools to support the learning and teaching process. The primary focus of our research is upon practical tools that can be applied in teaching Computer Science at university level. Complementary research is addressing conceptual issues concerned with the development of computer-based learning environments for general educational applications.

Current work is concerned with software tools and principles in the areas of peer assessment, plagiarism detection, and automated submission and assessment systems. Other projects include the development of agent-based pedagogic architectures, and the use of learning objects in educational software.

Our research is grounded both in the emerging technologies which support adaptivity and in computer science education, and as such much of our work is interdisciplinary.

Empirical Modelling

We are developing interactive environments that are unusually open and experiential. Special principles and tools have been developed exclusively at Warwick in recent years with which to construct and explore a wide variety of models. The modeller works rather like an artist with a painting — they can directly experience and modify the model throughout its construction according to her vision for the model.

The Empirical Modelling approach builds upon the philosophical and historical context of computing, and we actively contribute to those two disciplines.

Personalisation & Adaptation

We are exploring how software can adapt to an individual, through techniques such as adaptive hypermedia and user context modelling. This is underpinned by research into web semantics and social environments. Moreover, we are researching how adaptation techniques can be used beyond user modeling, for adaptive modeling of environments, adaptation to quality of service, adaptation to devices (mobile, desktop, etc.), adaptation to content structures, etc.

An important part in this work is played by adaptation languages, which are generic, and can thus be used in various adaptation setups.

Our interest includes the interoperability of adaptive systems, authoring of adaptive hypermedia, and user context modelling and prediction for web personalization.
