    Rescue Robot

Welcome to the University of Warwick Computer Science Department Rescue Robot Project 2010/11

    About This Project

The aim of this project is to program an autonomous robot for entry into the Robocup Rescue German Open 2010/11. This project is being carried out cooperatively with a team of engineers from WMR (Warwick Mobile Robotics). The engineers will be building the robot and our team will be programming it.

The RoboCup Rescue is an international competition that tests robots’ search and rescue abilities in a simulated disaster environment. Teams can enter both a tele-operated robot and an autonomous one. Warick Computer Science department became involved in the competition last year, when they teamed up with a group of fourth year masters students from Warwick engineering department, as part of WMG (Warwick Mobile Robotics) and WMG (Warick Manufacturing Group). The computer Science team took on the role of programming the autonomous robot.

Warwick Computer Science department decided to become involved in this competition not only because it provides some highly interesting technical challenges and research directions, but also because of the potential benefits the real world application of these principles could achieve when it comes to saving lives in a disaster environment.

Within the competition robots are expected to navigate around the test arena from an unknown start point, mapping their environment as they traverse challenging terrain, searching out and identifying victims trapped within the environment.

Last year’s team won first place in the European competition, as well as the best mobility title for the tele-operated robot. It is our aim to once again win the European competition and potentially compete in the World RoboCup Rescue 2011 championship in Istanbul.
