    ES327 Projects

    year.jpgModule Leader: Dr. K. Mao

    Module Information

    Scope

The 30 CATS module ES327 is one of the third year modules for:

    Core: Optional:
    • Automotive Engineering (MEng)
    • Civil Engineering (MEng)
    • Computer and Information Engineering (MEng)
    • Electronic Engineering (MEng)
    • Engineering Business Management (BEng)
    • Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering (BEng)
    • Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering (MEng)
    • Mechanical Engineering (MEng)
    • Systems Engineering (MEng)

Where students are performing at first class honours level and have the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies they may substitute ES327 for ES3B1 on the following degree courses:

    • Automotive Engineering (BEng)
    • Civil Engineering (BEng)
    • Computer and Information Engineering (BEng)
    • Electronic Engineering (BEng)
    • Engineering (BEng)
    • Mechanical Engineering (BEng)
    • Systems Engineering (BEng)

    Aims

    • To provide experience of performing a project on an individual basis.
    • To undertake an individual project under the supervision of a member of staff and report findings both orally and in writing.
    • To provide students with the opportunity of applying and demonstrating their capabilities (engineering knowledge, initiative, enthusiasm, etc) to plan, carry out and control an open-ended project in a topic of their choice.
    • To provide students with the opportunity of enhancing their communication skills: writing proposal, interim and final reports and giving an oral presentation.
    • To provide students with simulated experience of working as professional engineers in an industrial or research organisation.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to...

    • develop enhanced knowledge and understanding of the engineering or engineering-related topic of his/her project and apply that knowledge in an efficient manner.
    • demonstrate ability in several of the following areas:
      • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of technical problems
      • Risk assessment
      • Problem solving using appropriate methodologies
      • Research and information-gathering
      • Planning/designing an experiment
      • Designing a system/component/process based on an outline/detailed specification
    • show experience and enhancement in some (scope dependent) of the following discipline-specific practical skills:
      • In using appropriate engineering analysis software and IT tools
      • In designing and carrying out laboratory experiments using suitable techniques and procedures with due regard to safety
      • In testing design ideas in the laboratory/workshop with due regard to safety
    • show experience and enhancement of the following key skills:
      • Oral/written communication
      • Project management
      • Time management
      • Computing and IT (scope dependent)
      • Self-discipline and self-motivation

    Syllabus

A project topic must be selected from published lists or, alternatively, students may themselves propose suitable topics in consultation with Personal Tutors or potential supervisors.

The aim of project work is to deepen comprehension of principles by applying them to a new problem which may be the design and manufacture of a device, a research investigation, a computer or management project, or a design project.

Project work is undertaken during the Autumn and Spring terms. A progress report is required at Christmas, and a final report at the start of the Summer term. There is an oral presentation in the Summer term.

    Teaching Methods

These modules include 20 hours of tutorials.

    Required self-study: 280 hours

    Assessment

A 30 CATS module: 100% assessed consisting of a oral presentation, project logbook and interim report.

Note: A module mark of less than 40% will normally result in:

    • MEng students being removed from their MEng degree and being considered for the award of a BEng degree.
    • The award of an unaccredited degree (no accrediting body will recognise a degree where a student has failed their project)
