ES382 Quality Techniques
Co-Lecturer: Dr I.P. Tuersley, Dr J. Marshall
Module Information
Scope
This 15 CATS module is one of the third year modules for:
| Core: | Optional: |
|
|
Aims
This course deals specifically with the techniques required for quality control, reliability and maintenance in modern manufacturing industry. It aims to give an awareness of quality and reliability issues and to provide the essential tools whereby such an awareness can be harnessed in a practical situation.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to...
- Assess the need for quality and reliability in a range of industrial situations.
- Assess the appropriateness of a range of techniques in the analysis of quality and reliability.
- Apply such tools effectively.
Syllabus
Various aspects of quality and reliability are covered for electrical, mechanical and manufacturing systems. In particular, design for quality and reliability of plant, machinery, equipment and structures is examined using the appropriate statistical techniques.
Elements of Quality Engineering: Quality by Design. Quality Function Deployment. Quality costs.
Statistical Techniques in Quality Control: Statistical Process Control. Discrete and continuous distributions. Process capability. Measurement System Analysis. Probability thinking. Tests of Significance. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Taguchi experimental design.
Reliability: Load-strength behaviour. Hazard risk analysis. Reliability modelling and prediction. Analysing reliability data. Reliability distribution (Normal, Weibull, etc.).
Engineering Applications: Reliability of mechanical components. Software reliability. Human reliability issues. Case study.
Teaching Methods
This module includes 30 hours of lectures and 3 hours of laboratory sessions.
Required self-study: 117 hours
Assessment
A 15 CATS module: 80% examined via a 3 hour paper
Exam rubric information
- Answer 5 Questions chosen from 7
and 20% assessed consisting of an assignment.
