Aims
The module will introduce the concepts of design for safety and design for comfort for automotive vehicles. The module aims to promote an understanding of, and an interest in, the issues of design for safety and comfort, not only for the passengers of the vehicles but for pedestrians and other road users.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to...
- Understand the engineering principles that underpin the design of an automobile for the safety of the occupants and other road users.
- Understand the engineering principles that underpin the design of an automotive vehicle for the comfort of the occupants and other road users.
- Recognize the future direction of the design of safety and comfort systems within the automotive engineering sector.
- Appreciate the role and use of safety systems in automobile engineering.
- Appreciate the role and use of comfort systems in automobile engineering.
Syllabus
Introduction to automotive safety systems both for the vehicle occupants and for other road users.
The design, construction and operation of safety systems such as: airbags, safety cage, roof crush, crumple zones, seat belts, bumper, bonnet and impact bars.
Introduce the concept of the crashworthiness of a vehicle.
Introduction to automotive comfort systems for both the vehicle occupants and other road users.
Introduction to the design, construction and operation of comfort systems such as: NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) of chassis, engines and power train, ride quality and sound quality; heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Teaching Methods
This module includes 30 hours of lectures, 2 hours of examples classes and 6 hours of laboratory sessions.
Required self-study: 112 hours
Assessment
A 15 CATS module: 70% examined via a 3 hour paper
- 1 Compulsory Question - worth 60% of the available marks
- 2 Optional Questions chosen from 3
and 30% assessed consisting of one assignment
