    Module Information

    Scope

    This 15 CATS module is one of the third year modules for:

    Core: Optional:
    • Automotive Engineering (BEng)
    • Civil Engineering (BEng)
    • Computer and Information Engineering (BEng)
    • Electronic Engineering (BEng)
    • Mechanical Engineering (BEng)
    • Systems Engineering (BEng)

    Subject to the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies and a First Class Honours performance, BEng students on the above courses may replace this module by the 30 CATS module ES327 Project. This will result in a 15 CATS overload in Year 3.

    Aims

    • To provide experience of performing a project on an individual basis (projects may be specified to groups and may involve some group interaction)
    • To provide students with the opportunity of applying and demonstrating their capabilities (engineering knowledge, initiative, enthusiasm, etc) to plan, carry out and control an open-ended design project in a specified topic.
    • To provide students with the opportunity of enhancing their communication skills: writing proposal, interim and final reports and giving an oral presentation.
    • To provide students with simulated experience of working as professional engineers in an industrial or research organisation.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the module the student should be able to...

    • develop enhanced knowledge and understanding of the engineering or engineering-related topic of his/her project and apply that knowledge in an efficient manner.
    • demonstrate ability in several of the following areas:
      • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of technical problems
      • Risk assessment
      • Problem solving using appropriate methodologies
      • Research and information-gathering
      • Designing a system/component/process based on an outline/detailed specification
    • show experience and enhancement in some (scope dependent) of the following discipline-specific practical skills:
      • In using appropriate engineering analysis software and IT tools
      • In testing design ideas in the laboratory/workshop/studio with due regard to safety
    • show experience and enhancement of the following key skills:
      • Oral/written communication· Project management
      • Time management
      • Computing and IT (scope dependent)
      • Self-discipline and self-motivation

    Syllabus

    A number of projects are offered as significant pieces of design work. These are to provide the opportunity for the student to apply material from the core lecture courses.

    Each student will be assigned a tutor for each project selected or assigned.

    The project will be completed by week 21.

    For each project, although an element of group work will be involved, the student will be assessed as an individual, basing his/her design on unique information. Generally, this will include technical and economic data.

    The general approach will be for preliminary thinking to be based on limited information, with further information being supplied by the tutor (acting as the client) as the work progressed.


    Teaching Methods

    This module includes 5 hours of seminars and 15 hours of Tutorials.

    Required self-study: 130 hours


    Assessment

    A 15 CATS module: 100% assessed consisting of a project report.

    Note: The accrediting bodies require a mark of 40% or more in your project.
