ES3B3 Electrical Machines and Power Systems
Module Information
Scope
This 15 CATS module is one of the third year modules for:
| Core: | Optional: |
|
|
Aims
All disciplines of the engineering profession require a sound understanding of the linkages between electrical, mechanical and electronic systems. The aims of this module are: to promote an understanding of the construction and operational behaviour of electrical machines, transformers and circuits; to stimulate interest in the design of electrical and mechanical drive systems; and to develop skills in the analysis and design of power systems, and in the efficient use of energy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to...
- Understand the principles of operation and analysis of electrical power systems.
- Calculate the power requirements of machines and prepare a specification for a drive system. Select appropriate drive components to meet a specification.
- Analyse critically the operation of a drive system and formulate and test hypotheses about its operation.
- Use appropriate instruments to measure the performance of a system. Analyse and present the results in a concise, informative and readable way.
Syllabus
Introduction: torque, power and energy.
AC power circuits: introductory theory and practice of single-phase, and three-phase systems.
Single-phase transformers: construction, operation and mathematical modelling.
Electrical machines: brief treatment of the construction, operation, steady-state characteristics and mathematical modelling of synchronous machines and induction motors; including inverter control.
Teaching Methods
This module includes 30 hours of lectures, 2 hours of examples classes and 6 hours of laboratory sessions.
Required self-study: 112 hours
Assessment
A 15 CATS module: 80% examined via a 2 hour paper
Exam rubric information
- Answer 3 Questions chosen from 4 (from 2012/13 4 compulsory questions)
and 20% assessed consisting of laboratory report.
