    ES3C4 Productionising Designs

    year.jpgModule Leader: Dr J. Wallbank

    Module Information

    Scope

This 15 CATS module is one of the third year modules for:

    Core: Optional:
    • Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering
    • Engineering
    • Engineering Business Management

    Aims

This module takes key concepts, including process planning and manufacturing processes, from modules taken in the first two years of the course and blends them together to deliver the required basic concepts for manufacturing engineers.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to...

    • Carry out a DFMA analysis following techniques pioneered by Boothroyd, and redesign components for manufacture and assembly
    • Select appropriate primary and secondary manufacturing process, utilising the CES software.
    • Understand manufacturing requirements from CAD models and / or drawings and appreciate interstage drawing requirements.

    Syllabus

    1. The Boothroyd / Dewhurst design for manufacture methodology. Synthetic timings using manual data given in text books.

    2. Methodologies for reduction of assembly time. Metrics for measuring good design.

    3. Component redesign to aid assembly.

    4. Link between some common component manufacturing processes and suitable design. This will feature solid and liquid forming processes with both metals and plastics to illustrate the origin of design rules related to material behaviour in moulds

    5. Reading of drawings for the manufacturing processes. Variant and generative process planning

    Teaching Methods

This module includes 30 hours of lectures and 5 hours of laboratory sessions.

    Required self-study: 115 hours

    Assessment

    A 15 CATS module: 70% examined via a 3 hour paper

    Exam rubric information

    • Answer 4 Questions chosen from 6

and 30% assessed consisting of a design exercise.
