"Minimising Carbon Footprints with Concrete Construction" Professor Ravindra K Dhir OBE

A recent review has concluded that climate change could cost the world between 5-20% of GDP, and result in famine, floods, mass movement of people and destruction of species. Climate change is linked to the significant increase in CO2 emissions to which construction is a major contributor; its energy sources being inextricably carbon-based and non-renewable.

Civil engineers can play an important role in minimising climate change, through their choice of construction methods/materials, and adopting new technologies. Based on his research expertise, Professor Dhir will highlight how the carbon footprints associated with construction can be minimised through the appropriate design and use of concrete; the most widely-used construction material.
