‘Power electronics in rugged environments leads to over design and expensive solutions… Or does it??’

Abstract

This talk will look at engineering consultancy in the automotive sector with a focus on system specification and how it relates to power electronics and electric machines in vehicle systems. The specification is key to controlling cost of any design and to develop a component level specification the entire system must first be understood.

About The Speaker

Dr Will Drury is currently Team Leader of Electric Drives in the Hybrid & Electronic Business Unit at Ricardo leading a team of engineers on the development and implementation of entire drive systems through client projects. Will supports Ricardo’s work on this across a worldwide client base delivering new technology platforms and working closely with existing and potential clients on technology innovation.

Will works directly on the application of electric drive (eMachines, power electronics and control) to a wide range of applications including automotive, rail, clean energy, marine and off-highway. Will has a keen interest in the development of power electronics and their application throughout the transport infrastructure looking at novel ways to apply existing products as well as embracing emerging technologies.

Previously he has worked in the renewable energy sector on grid tied inverters for wind turbines. Will obtained an MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Bristol in 2005 and a PhD in 2011 on An adaptive structure based sensorless position estimator for permanent magnet machines in aerospace applications. He is a Chartered (CEng), a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) and a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (MIEEE).
