DSSP: 'Adventures in Material Characterisation’
'Adventures in Material Characterisation’
Dr James Bowen from the Open University
Abstract
An overview of academic and industrially-relevant projects involving the characterisation of a variety of formulated and engineered materials will be presented. The application of well-established techniques across a wide range of disciplines will be discussed. Of particular interest is the characterisation of formulated products, as well as those materials used for medical and personal care applications. Examples involving the use of atomic force microscopy for measuring surface topography and adhesion are included. The use of rheological measurements, spherical indentation, and mercury intrusion porosimetry for capturing information regarding mechanical and structural properties is also discussed. If you've ever wanted to hear about shampoo, chewing gum, medical implants, and preventing flash flooding - all in one talk - then this is the talk for you.
