'Engineering Innovation'

Abstract

The talk will focus on three main issues. First the potential benefits to the economy of Start-ups Second what it takes to be a successful Entrepreneur and thirdly the suitability of engineering training for starting a business.

Bio
Professor Board was educated at Llanelli Boys Grammar School and after serving as an Electrical apprentice in the Steel Industry, undertook his first degree in Electrical Engineering at Swansea University.
Following a taught Masters there he did his PhD in Bangor University after which he joined GEC at the Hirst Research Centre in Wembley where he worked on Gunn Diodes. Shortly after he joined the Philips Research Labs in Redhill Surrey where he became research project leader. In 1975 he joined Swansea University as a lecturer and between 1979 and 1982 spent time at Cornell University as a Research Associate Professor. In 1986 was awarded a personal Chair at Swansea and was Head of department there for seven years between 1992 and 1999.
His research interests centred on semiconductor devices and related technologies and in 1998 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
He has had a long term interest in Entrepreneurship and has founded or co-founded a number of companies including Rockfield Software, Enfis plc ( now photonstarLED) and Clyne Energy Ltd.
He is the author or co-author of over eighty peer review publication and has co authored a text book on semiconductor devices and technology.
