Entry Requirements

[c]

Warwick are happy to accept applicants with a wide variety of academic qualifications. The list below gives details of our normal entry requirements for a range of qualifications.

Please note that the information given below is for guidance only - each application is considered individually.

All candidates must meet the University's Undergraduate Admission Requirement (UAR).
The UAR requires that candidates should normally offer a broad range of GCSE subjects at grade C or higher, including English Language and a science subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted. International students must have an acceptable English Language qualification. Typical entry requirements (in addition to the above UAR) are listed below:

GCE A-levels

General:

Candidates are expected to offer three GCSE Advanced Level (A2) subjects, excluding General Studies. A2-level subjects should normally include Mathematics and Physics as these are very important foundation subjects for a degree course in Engineering. However, the School will consider very strong applicants who offer only A2 Mathematics or A2 Physics. For the third A2 subject there is a wide variety of other subjects at A2 level to choose from. Some of the more common subjects offered by past applicants are Further Mathematics, Electronics, Design, Chemistry, Biology, Geography (popular with Civil Engineering applicants), Business, Economics, English or Foreign languages.

Those applicants offering only A2 Physics should have a proven mathematical ability and a strong profile at A2 level. A proven mathematics capability would be a strong result in the most recent Mathematics qualification, a B at AS level or an A at GCSE. Such candidates, if admitted, replace their optional module with the module 'Foundation Mathematics' in their first year at Warwick.

For an applicant offering only A2 Mathematics they should have a proven capability in Science and/or Physics as demonstrated by their most recent relevant qualification, a B at AS level Physics or an A in GCSE Science or Physics, as well as a strong profile at A2 level.

The extended project will provide excellent experience in research skills and is something that could be mentioned in the UCAS personal statement and discussed at any interview. However, the extended project will not be included in any conditional offer.

All UK based candidates are interviewed prior to receiving an offer.

The A Level grade requirements vary according to the individual candidate's situation but typical offers are:

MEng: AAB

BEng/BSc: BBB

Access Courses

As each Access course is unique we review the syllabus of each course individually to access if the content will provide a suitable preparation to enable applicants to cope with our courses. All applicants offering an Access course also need to offer A2 Mathematics in addition at grade A or B. This is to ensure that applicants have both the Mathematics skills required to cope and some recent examination experience to help them cope in the University exam-based environment. Please contact us if you want more information about an individual Access course.

 BTEC
We will accept BTEC Engineering qualifications, such as BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Electrical & Electronic, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering but the diploma must be accompanied by A2 level Mathematics. This is to ensure that applicants have both the Mathematics skills required to cope and some recent examination experience to help them cope in the University exam-based environment.

Foundation Programmes

Within the UK and Internationally there are a great many foundation programmes aiming to provide access to higher education. Unfortunately, the quality and scope of these courses vary tremendously and it is therefore difficult to give generic guidance on our acceptance criteria.

Students studying on Warwick's Higher Education Foundation Programme (HEFP)in Science and Engineering or Business Studies are guaranteed a conditional offer of a place to read engineering at Warwick, provided that they apply through UCAS before the normal deadline. Our normal offer for such students is:

MEng/BEng/BSc:
Distinction in all HEFP modules.

We are also happy to receive applications from students studying on other high quality foundation programmes. Because of the differences between the various programmes it is not possible to give an indication here of which programmes would be acceptable or what our conditional offer level might be. However, where a programme is judged acceptable we will be looking for very good overall performance, with excellent marks in the mathematics component. Applicants will also need to satisfy our normal entrance requirements, including the provision of an appropriate English qualification.
