| It gives me great pleasure to introduce the activities of the Deans of Engineering Alliance to you. The Midlands is the centre of Engineering & Manufacturing Industry within the United Kingdom, and has a long history dating back to the beginning of the industrial revolution over 300 years ago. The importance of this sector to our economy is recognised by the wealth of Engineering Faculties within Universities throughout the region. These faculties create thousands of Engineering graduates and post-graduates each year, which are vital to the success of our industry. Leaders of Engineering & Technology faculties realised the importance of working together during the mid to late 1990’s when student numbers on engineering courses were declining and a small group met regularly to share information and ideas. Having realised the benefits of this collaboration, the “West-Midlands Deans’ of Engineering & Technology Forum” was formed in 2001. Meetings were held more formally with a structured agenda, guest speakers and representatives from external organisations. In 2008 the Deans’ decided to expand the membership to the East Midlands, and renamed the group “Deans of Engineering Alliance” in the Midlands, and agreed a new constitution. |
