    RESEARCH PROFILE

    Areas of expertise include:

  • Experimental design for field, glasshouse and mushroom trials and laboratory studies, including large microarray studies
  • Statistical analysis of experimental data, including modelling and multivariate approaches, and spatial patterns
  • The provision of statistical and mathematical education for biologists (and other non-specialists)
  • Andrew leads the development and presentation of biometrical and mathematical education within Warwick HRI, primarily aimed at MSc and PhD students both within and outside the department, but also including both internal and external short courses of specific aspects of statistics and mathematical modelling (some in collaboration with the Statistics Department of the University of Warwick).

Current areas of collaborative research include:

  • Analysis and modelling of weed seed bank dynamics and of herbicide resistance (with Paul Neve)
  • Developing sampling and decision making protocols for supervised control of foliar pests of field crops (particularly brassicas and lettuce) (with Rosemary Collier)
  • Modelling the variability of the mushroom cropping process (with Ralph Noble)
  • Developing ecosystem modelling approaches to provide evidence to support the development of policy relating to impacts of land-use changes on biodiversity (currently focussed on biomass crops and set-aside) (with Dave Skirvin)

See Modelling landscape impacts of biomass crops on biodiversity and Ecosystem modelling for biodiversity policy

  • Design and analysis approaches for large microarray timecourse experiments (with Katherine Denby, Vicky Buchanan-Wollaston)

  • BACKGROUND

    Biography

Andrew studied Statistics at the University of Bath (B.Sc. 1986), and then completed the M.Sc. in Biometry (including a dissertation on "Multidimensional Scaling and its application in Sensory Analysis") at the University of Reading (1987). He joined the Biometrics group at Warwick HRI in 1987.

    External Resposibilities

Andrew was elected to serve as President of the International Biometric Society for 2008 and 2009, also serving as Vice-President during 2007 and 2010. He has been a member of the IBS since 1987, serving as Secretary of the British and Irish Region of the IBS between 2000 and 2007, on the Regional Committee between 1995 and 2000, and on the International Council from 2002 to 2006. Within the IBS he has also served as co-Chair of the Strategic Plan Committee and as Chair of an ad-hoc committee charged with identifying awards to be made within the society.

He is a member of the Local Organising Committee and International Programme Committee for the 24th International Biometric Conference being hosted by the British and Irish Region of the IBS at University College Dublin in July 2008.

In July 2006 he was presented with the first "Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of the International Biometric Society in honour of his contributions through various volunteer leadership positions, hosting of the IBC 2008, development of the Channel Network, and support of the profession".

He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and was admitted to the status of Chartered Statistician (C.Stat.) by the Royal Statistical Society in 1993.

He is also a member of the European Weed Research Society, and acts as Statistical Consultant to the editorial board of Weed Research.
