RESEARCH PROFILEMolecular studies on host-pathogen interactions, detection, population structures and phylogeny of fungi, viruses and phytoplasmas. Main current pathogens are Verticillium wilts (especially of crucifers), Pythium violae (cavity spot of carrots), viruses of carrots and other umbellifers especially parsnip yellow fleck virus, Venturia inaequalis and phytoplasmas. Long-standing interest in serological detection and differentiation of viruses and virus-like pathogens. |
BACKGROUNDBSc (Hons), Biological Sciences (Microbiology), University of Birmingham, UK (1969); PhD, Biological Sciences, University of Birmingham (1972) on host-pathogen interactions with cucumber mosaic virus. Post-doctoral Fellow, Dept of Virology, University of Birmingham, 1972-76. Joined East Malling Research Station in 1976, moving to HRI-Wellesbourne in 1996. One year sabbatical at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, 1985-6. Initially worked on viruses and viroids of fruit and hops but since 1986 broadened to also include fungi and phytoplasmas and other crops. Covered many aspects from epidemiology to molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions; has had strong interests in serology and diagnostics but now mainly concerned with molecular approaches to understanding plant pathogens. |
