    Positive-strand RNA virus research

    RESEARCH PROFILE

    Random Picture
The positive-strand RNA viruses include a number of important human and veterinary pathogens including the enteroviruses, hepatitis C virus, foot and mouth disease virus, coronaviruses, caliciviruses (winter vomiting disease), dengue and yellow fever. We study fundamental aspects of the biology of representative viruses within this group, with the long-term goal of understanding their replication, life cycle and evolution. A better understanding of these characteristics will facilitate the development of novel therapeutic strategies to prevent or treat virus infection, as well as providing the essential insights into virus biology that will help our comprehension of future viral threats to human and animal health.

Our current research interest includes the attachment and entry mechanism of enteroviruses, the replication of poliovirus, the role of cis-acting replication elements in the life-cycle of hepatitis C virus, the role of RNA structure in virus replication and evolution, and the mechanism and consequences of recombination.
