    RESEARCH PROFILE

  • My research interests focus on the genetic analysis of crop traits. Since joining Warwick the majority of my work has been on Brassicas, but I have recently extended this to other crops including lettuce. A key underpinning component of my work has been the development and curation of genetic resources, particularly diversity sets (DFFSs) and segregating mapping populations, which we distribute to others around the world. These resources have been charactersised using a combination of genetic markers, but now next generation sequencing and high throughput SNP genotyping are primarily being used.
  • I am PI of the Warwick's section of the UK Defra Oilseed Rape Genetic Improvement Network (OREGIN) - development of B. napus diversity set, curation of mapping populations.
  • I co-ordinate Brassica and lettuce components of the Vegetable Genetic Improvement Network (VeGIN) - development of B. oleracea and wild C genome diversity sets, B. oleracea mapping populations, map integration using SNPs anchored to the draft genome sequence, genetics of nitrogen use efficiency in Brassica, development of a lettuce diversity set and map integration using SNPs.
  • I am a Co-I of a newly funded BBSRC CIRC project 'Exploiting sources of resistance to Turnip yellows virus for deployment in oilseed rape' led by John Walsh.
  • Other recent research includes the LINK project 'Breeding oilseed rape with a reduced requirement for nitrogen fertiliser', a Defra project which included the genetic analysis of the juvenile to adult phase change in Brassica, and the developmental regulation of cauliflower and broccoli developmental arrest.
  • Other activities include:

  • Member of the steering committee for the BBSRC Crop Improvement Research Club.
  • Member of the R&D Working Party of the British Society of Plant Breeders representing Warwick Crop Centre.

    BACKGROUND

I graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in biochemistry. This was followed by a PhD and postdoc working on chlorophyll biosysnthesis also at Bristol. A subsequent position at the University of Virginia on plant circadian regulation was followed by another at the University of Leeds characterising plant GATA transcription factors. I joined Warwick HRI in 1998 and in 2010 I became one of the founding members of the Warwick Crop Centre.
