Biotechnology
![]() |
Biotechnology is the application of biological processes and resources to produce energy, chemicals and products. We can see the results of biotechnology around us everyday, for example in the production of food (bread and cheese) and drink (wine and beer). While some of these processes have been used for thousands of years, we are only just starting to exploit the potential of biotechnology. There are a number of biotechnology research strands within the School of Life Sciences. School of Life Sciences researchers are working with colleagues from other schools within the University of Warwick to study biomass fermentation to produce chemicals and energy. |
We are using our knowledge of plant biology to help improve crop traits and to understand more about the production of pharmaceutical proteins in plants.
Our understanding of microbial metabolic pathways can be used to inform the generation of chemicals and bioremediation of chemical pollutants.
