Human Wellbeing
|
The average life expectancy is increasing and currently there are 10 million people in the UK who are over 65 years old. Unfortunately, this increase in lifespan is not matched by an increase in lifelong heath and it is essential we improve our understanding of human wellbeing and disease. Bacteria and viruses cause a number of infectious diseases. Improving our knowledge of how these microorganisms function can lead to potential new therapeutic targets. Researchers within the School of Life Sciences are studying antibiotic resistance, bacterial pathogenicity and control of translation in viruses. We are investigating how neural networks are developed, chemical signalling within the brain, understanding the effects of metabolic stress and prion proteins. This research will have an impact on our understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative disease. We are working with colleagues to understand the nutritional benefits of a balanced diet. |
