The Intercalated Year is a year of salaried employment within industry or a research establishment. The scheme operates following successful completion of year 2. First year students are invited to apply for the scheme and are internally selected. Typically around 20 students participate and go on to competitively secure external placements.
Students participating in the Intercalated Year gain invaluable practical and professional experience, which generally reflects well when they return to complete their final year. The experience also boosts their employability. Students are awarded their final degree 'with Intercalated Year'.
The Department has excellent links with work places in the UK and worldwide. Many companies ask for Warwick students year after year because of their high level of training.
Recent placements include: Astra-Zeneca, GSK, GE Healthcare, Pfizer, Novartis,
'Working at the Forensic Laboratories for my Intercalated Year was a fantastic experience. It was a dream come true to get an offer to work there. I was part of a research team looking at using single nucleotide polymorphisms for DNA fingerprinting'. Joe Grove, who spent a year at The Forensic Sciences Laboratories in Birmingham.
