    Genetic Resources Unit Collaborations

The UK Plant Genetic Resources Group is an ad hoc group of representatives involved in the various aspects of plant genetic resources work. Information on the various collections in the UK can be found on the UKPGRG home page.

Genetic Resources Unit (GRU) staff are actively involved in the ECPGR Allium, Brassica, Leafy Vegetables and Umbellifer Crop Working Groups, and act as Database Managers for the European Allium database (EADB) with passport data for onion, garlic, leek and wild taxa, and the European Umbellifer database with passport data of crops in 9 genera including Anethum L. (dill), Apium L. (celery), Carum L. (caraway), Chaerophyllum L. (chervil), Coriandrum L. (coriander), Daucus L. (carrot), Foeniculum Miller (fennel), Pastinaca L. (parsnip), and Petroselinum Hoffm. (parsley). We also act as the UK contact group for the ECPGR Solanaceae Vegetables Working Group. We maintain close collaborations with CGN and partition resources for some crops by maintaining complementary collections and mutual safety duplicates

CEC GENRES 105 Carrot Project (2000-2004) was coordinated by the GRU and had eight partners in six countries: France, Germany (2), Greece, Italy, Sweden & UK (2). The project targeted the collection, conservation, characterization, documentation and evaluation of carrot and wild Daucus taxa in EU countries. The project developed an EU Carrot/Daucus Inventory. The GRU input to the project was on a shared cost basis matched specifically by Defra funds under the GC0122 carrot genetic resources project.

CEC GENRES 109/112 Brassica Project (2000-2004) was coordinated by CGN with the GRU acting as subco-ordinator for the Brassica rapa group. As above matching funds were from the Defra GC0123 Brassica genetic resources project.

CEC GENRES Allium Project (1996-2000) was coordinated by the GRU with eight partners in seven countries: Denmark, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden & UK. The project targeted the collection, conservation, characterization, documentation and evaluation of five Allium crops (onion, shallot, garlic, leek & chive) and wild taxa in EU countries.

CEC Research Projects: FAIR - Allium: Tailoring the onion crop for the 21st century, the development of high quality fresh and processed onions. This project was centred on the evaluation of flavour and carbohydrates in onion using molecular genetics, biochemical analysis and marker assisted selection (project ended 28/02/2001).
