The Future of European Carrot: a programme to conserve, characterise, evaluate and collect carrot and wild relatives
The Carrot, Daucus carota, is an important commercial vegetable. The genus Daucus is also a native to Europe and hence a responsibility of EU Countries under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The project dealt with the genepool of carrot and its wild relatives, aiming to co-ordinate work in European collections through five main areas of activity:
|
i) |
the conservation and documentation of European collections |
|
ii) |
characterisation for minimal descriptors |
|
iii) |
evaluation for important horticultural characters, such as pest and disease resistance and chemical composition |
|
iv) |
sort and rationalise the collections |
|
v) |
collection of germplasm to fill gaps in collections. |
