The Future of European Carrot: a programme to conserve, characterise, evaluate and collect carrot and wild relatives

The Carrot, Daucus carota, is an important commercial vegetable. The genus Daucus is also a native to Europe and hence a responsibility of EU Countries under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The project dealt with the genepool of carrot and its wild relatives, aiming to co-ordinate work in European collections through five main areas of activity:

    i)

the conservation and documentation of European collections

    ii)

    characterisation for minimal descriptors

    iii)

evaluation for important horticultural characters, such as pest and disease resistance and chemical composition

    iv)

    sort and rationalise the collections

    v)

collection of germplasm to fill gaps in collections.
