    Careers - Mathematics Undergraduate Admissions

    Careers for Maths Graduates

Warwick has a strong reputation with employers. Graduates with good mathematics degrees have excellent prospects in a wide range of careers. The most popular are in Computing, Education, and above all in the Financial Sector (Accountancy, Actuarial Consultancy, Markets, and Banking).

Why Mathematics graduates are sought after by employers
Enlightened employers know they are on to a good thing when they get a job application from a well-qualified mathematics graduate. Why is this?

In today's work place, the ability to adapt to change and to learn new things is more important than having a particular knowledge base, which may become outdated when technology moves on. Modern employers regularly retrain their management and work force. Successful dogs need constantly to learn new tricks.

In the course of a Maths degree you will develop many of the qualities of intellect and temperament needed to meet new challenges. Every module presents you with a raft of new ideas, structures, and results that you have to understand and absorb so that you can apply them creatively to solving problems. The experience will equip you with

    • Analytical Skills
    • Logical Thought-Processes
    • Problem-Solving Ability
    • Investigative Skills
    • Communication Skills
    • Effective Working Habits
    • Useful Personal Qualities

Careers followed by graduates with Mathematics degrees

The University's Careers Service contacts Warwick Maths graduates 6 months after they get their degrees.

Destinations for maths graduates tend to follow a consistent pattern, with many following a path into the financial sector. 2008 has seen a rise in those choosing further study, with the biggest increase in graduates doing the PGCE. There has been a slight rise this year in the number of students still seeking employment. Some graduates are in routine employment, such as waitressing, sales or clerical work, which often is a means of saving money for further study or for travel.

The detailed records kept by the Careers Service show two clear things about our mathematicians

    • the sheer variety of professions open to them
    • their penetration in certain key areas of the economy like Finance and IT.
