The Department has a flexible policy towards those seeking entry with different qualifications from the A-Levels described in the
Standard Offer; in particular, we welcome
applications from abroad and also from
mature students. What counts is the potential to succeed in our course.
Applicants with Alternative Qualifications
We encourage applications from students with other academic backgrounds.
Typical offers include:
International Baccalaureate (IB)
A total of 39 points including 6 in Higher Level Maths and 6 in two more HL subjects, plus Grade 2 / Distinction in STEP / AEA.
European Baccalaureate (EB)
An average of 8.0 with at least 9.0 in Maths (5 periods), and 8.5 in Advanced Maths if offered, plus Grade 2 / Distinction in STEP / AEA.
French Baccalaureate (FB)
15.5/20 overall including 17/20 in Maths, plus Grade 2 / Distinction in STEP / AEA.
Scottish Highers
Grade A in Mathematics, A, A, B, B in Scottish Highers PLUS grade A in two Advanced Highers including A1 in Maths (C100), plus Grade 2 / Distinction in STEP / AEA.
Cambridge Pre-U
Students offering the Cambridge Pre-U or combinations of this and A-levels will receive offers comparable to our standard A-level offer.
Foundation Programmes
The Foundation Programmes at some, but not all, universities and colleges are acceptable for admission to our courses as long as the mathematics component reaches a level equivalent to at least grade A at A level Maths. Some programmes at David Game College, UCL (UPCSE), Warwick (Science HEFP) and York reach this level. Applicants will also be asked to sit, and achieve Grade 2/Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
