Overseas ApplicantsThe Department has a flexible policy towards those seeking entry with different qualifications from the A-Levels described in the Standard Offer; in particular, we welcome applications from abroad and will consider each case on its merits. What counts is the potential to succeed in our course.
Applications from Overseas
The Department of Mathematics welcomes applications from overseas students, whether or not they fulfil our A-Level requirements, or an alternative qualification, or a national qualification, some of which are listed below. Whatever their background, applicants must demonstrate that they have the potential to succeed in the degree course applied for. All candidates must satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirement including a minimum level of competence in the English Language. Bulgaria
5.8 overall in Diploma Za Sredno Obrazovanie including 6.0 in Maths. Candidates will also be required to sit, and achieve Grade 2 / Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
Cyprus
Most applicants sit A-Levels and a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper. They will be made the standard offer. Applications from those following the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the European Baccalaureate (EB) will be made the relevant offer listed here.
France
Baccalauréat Scientifique: A score of 15.5 overall with at least 17 in Mathematics, plus Grade 2 / Distinction in a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper. Germany
Abitur: A score of 1.5 overall and must also have achieved at least 14 in Maths. Candidates will also be required to sit, and achieve Grade 2 / Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
India
85% overall, including 90% in Mathematics and 85% in a subject specified depending on the course applied for, at Standard XII from the Central Board of Secondary Education or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination. Candidates will also be required to sit, and achieve Grade 2 / Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
Ireland
Highers: Grade A1 in Mathematics, A1 in another Mathematics (e.g. Applied Mathematics), A, A, A. Candidates will also be required to sit, and achieve Grade 2 / Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper. Lithuania
Brandos Atestatas: 90% overall, including 95% in the national exam in Mathematics. Marks may also be specified in other subjects, like Physics or Economics, depending on the course applied for. Candidates will also be required to sit, and achieve Grade 2 / Distinction in, a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
Singapore
AAA at H2 Level in Mathematics, a subject like Physics or Economics (depending on course applied for) and another subject. ALSO Either Distinction in Mathematics at H3 Level, or Merit in H3 Maths and Grade 2 / Distinction in a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.
USA
770 in SAT Subject test Mathematics Level 2 PLUS 5 in Calculus BC, and 5, 5 in two other full Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations. Also Grade 2 / Distinction in a Mathematics STEP or AEA paper.Other Overseas Qualifications
We make offers based on a range of other overseas examinations but would ask that you include in your Personal Statement several sentences indicating the high points of your mathematics syllabus.
