SIAM Student Chapter

About

We are a group of PhD students organising talks in applied mathematics. Everyone - undergraduates, postgraduates and staff, in mathematics as well as other departments - are welcome to attend!

If you would like to stay informed about upcoming talks and selected international conferences (including funding opportunities!), please subscribe to our mailing list. If you like our work, please tell us on our Facebook page. And if you want to connect with applied mathematicians beyond Warwick, please consider joining SIAM.

Mathematical Modelling of Aeroacoustics and Metal FormingMathematical modelling is a major part of aeroacoustics research

(basically predicting sound from aircraft). New aircraft have to adhere
to ever stricter noise requirements, meaning that noise is now a major
consideration in the design process. Since computers are not yet
sufficiently powerful to simulate the noise from an entire aircraft
engine, and experiments are extremely expensive, mathematical modelling
continues to play a major role. In the first half of this talk, I will
describe mathematical models used to investigate the performance of
acoustic linings in aircraft engines, and on some of the mathematics
behind computational aeroacoustics simulations.

By contrast, mathematical modelling is not yet a major part of metal
forming research (basically investigating how metal is bent into shape).
While computer simulations have been good enough for designing metal
forming processes, they are not fast enough for state-of-the-art online
control, where defects are detected and corrected during the forming
process. Mathematical modelling is the ideal solution. In the second
half of this talk, I will describe metal forming and some preliminary
mathematical modelling attempts.

SIAM Membership

If you are interested in applied mathematics, we warmly invite you to join the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). It is a great opportunity to connect with professional applied mathematicians, and thanks to this Student Chapter, membership is free for all Warwick students. Please see the SIAM student membership page for the full list of benefits and details on how to sign up. If you do sign up, please indicate your association with this student chapter as this helps us to prove to SIAM that our chapter is alive and well.
