    EPSRC Symposium Workshop on Computational Fluid Dynamics

    Computational Fluid Dynamics

    Tuesday 1 – Thursday 3 September 2009

    Report on the Computational Fluid Dynamics Workshop

    Background

    The unifying theme of this workshop will be large-scale computations of boundary layer flows. A common problem to many aeronautic and atmospheric simulations is how to couple the physics of thin boundary layers to large-scale flows. In the aeronautic context it is the curvature of the aerofoil and three-dimensional structure of the body that underlie the problem. In the atmospheric context the coupling depends upon the scale. Near the boundaries the concerns are more about the elements of the boundary layer, canopies and roughness, as well as the fluxes of heat, moisture and pollutants. Only further from the surface do questions of turbulent transport and coupling to the large-scale flow become important.

    The workshop will also include sessions on advances in numerical techniques for stability and transient response computations in boundaries layers and complex geometries promoting separation.

    Aims

    The aim of this workshop is to facilitate communications between the geophysical, aeronautics, and hydrodynamic stability communities.

    Format

    The conference will start on Monday afternoon and finish on Thursday. There will be a limited number of lectures per day, to give the participants enough time for discussions and collaborations.

    The workshop will be organized around the following topics: (i) Aeronautic boundary layers; (ii) Stability and transient response in boundaries layers; (iii) Atmospheric boundary layers; (iv) Large-eddy simulations;

    Participants

    Phil Archer (Southampton), Dwight Barkley (Warwick), Chris Cantwell (Warwick), Ian Castro (Southampton), Gary Coleman (Southampton), Steve Derbyshire (UK Met Office), Drimitis Drikakis (Cranfield), Uwe Ehreinstein (IRPHE), Flavio Giannetti (Salerno), Robert Kerr (Warwick), Sylvain Lardeau (Imperial), Arnold Moene (Wageningen, NL), Zbigniew Piotrowski (Warsaw), Jean-Christophe Robinet (SINUMEF ), Paul Tucker (Cambridge)

    Venue

    Greetings will be held in the Common Room of the Mathematics Institute on Monday. Talks will be held in the Mathematics Institute. This is building 35 of the Warwick central campus.

    Note that the university is located at the outskirts of Coventry and not in Warwick.

    See http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/

    for travel details and http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/ for maps of the central campus.

    In case you come by car, parking is available for delegates at Car Park 15.
