The goal of this workshop is to bring together a diverse group of theorists (mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists and engineers) and experimentalists who share common interests in developing and applying new ways to understand the molecular mechanisms—the switches, clocks and signals—that control the physiological properties of living organisms. The central topics of the workshop will include deterministic and stochastic modelling of circadian rhythms and other biological oscillators, signalling networks, and the cell division cycle. Participants will share the latest experimental results in molecular genetics and cell biology and the most powerful theoretical tools of modelling, simulation and analysis. Important themes will be (i) tools and methods for uncovering design principles behind regulatory and signalling networks and (ii) linking models with biological data and the use of mathematics for informing experiments and for experimental optimization. This programme will run for 3 weeks with a one-week conference. A limited number of theorist specialists will spend the whole 3 weeks at Warwick interacting through seminars, informal working groups, and tutorials. The conference week will bring these together with experimentalists around the three key themes of oscillators, signals and switches. As well as seminars this week’s activities will include tutorials and software demonstrations. To some extent this workshop will act as a follow-up meeting to the highly successful Biological Clocks and Switches meeting organised by Tyson, Goldbeter and Ruoff at KITP, Santa Barbara.
