The Module MA3E2 Group Theory 2007-08
Teaching and assessing mathematics through the medium of a wiki
This is a new way to teach, learn and assess a mathematics module.
Working in small groups, students will put flesh and bones on the skeleton syllabus provided by posting and editing content on a specially-created module wiki. The module credit will be awarded for
- the correctness of the mathematics and relevance to the syllabus,
- the clarity and economy of the proofs and accompanying narrative, and
- the contribution to a reader's understanding using lively explanations, providing context, insight and analogy, constructing examples and counterexamples, and cross-referencing within the module and beyond.
The work will be carried out in eight two-week cycles, with marks awarded and feedback given at the end of each cycle. All the credit will come from the wiki and there will be no final exam.
