    Equality in Physics

The Physics Department and the University of Warwick are proud of their diverse community of staff, students, and visitors, and are committed to maintaining an excellent record in teaching and research by ensuring that there is equality of opportunity for all, fostered in an environment of mutual respect and dignity.

The Physics Department works alongside the University to ensure that we offer a welcoming and productive environment in which to study and work.

Gender Equality - Athena Swan and Project Juno
Physics has traditionally been a male-dominated subject. The Department of Physics at Warwick aims to address this imbalance by working with the Institute of Physics Project Juno and the Athena SWAN Charter.

In the Department, 15% of its academic staff are female. This is one of the highest percentages in the UK and includes four recent appointments and four full professors.

The Department of Physics has been recognised for its efforts to promote gender equality amongst both staff and students through the IOP’s Project Juno. In 2009, the University of Warwick, along with Imperial College London, became the first physics departments to be recognised by the IOP as Juno Champions.

In 2010, the Departments of Physics and Chemistry were both awarded silver status by the Athena SWAN Charter. The University of Warwick was awarded bronze status overall. The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women in science, engineering and technology. There are as yet no gold-status universities in the UK, and only one gold-status academic department.
