Welcome to the Department of Physics

Congratulations on your new appointment!

May I take this opportunity of welcoming you to the University of Warwick and especially into the Department of Physics.

Physics was one of the earliest departments to be established in the University of Warwick, back in 1965, and has grown from small beginnings to become one of the top physics and astronomy departments in the UK. We now number more than 1,000 staff and students.

Our research spans fields of astrophysics, condensed matter, elementary particles, plasmas, soft matter and theoretical physics, with staff publishing over 500 research papers each year. We take on 30-40 new PhD students each year who work across the whole range of research interests as well as in interdisciplinary Centres for Doctoral Training.

Our undergraduate students study BSc and MPhys degrees in physics, as well as jointly with mathematics and with business studies. We are absolutely committed to giving all of our students the best experience that we can offer. The dedication of all staff to this aim is reflected in a very high level of student satisfaction with their courses, as well as an excellent record of graduate employment.

We want this to be an excellent and inclusive working environment, where all people are treated with respect and given equal opportunities regardless of background, age, gender, race, disability or sexual orientation. It is incumbent on all staff and students to uphold this environment of mutual respect and dignity, and to speak out if this is ever not so.

The induction programme is designed to provide you with up-to-date information and guide you through some of our routine procedures that are necessary for smooth, safe and efficient operation. It also includes mandatory training modules that you should complete as listed within the induction programme.

Please ensure that you read the departmental Health and Safety information. This is obviously important if you are working in a laboratory environment, but all staff who enter a laboratory area need to be aware of the potential hazards, as well as those in their own working environments. The safety of all our staff and students is of utmost importance to us and your full cooperation on this matter is requested.

I hope that you will enjoy working in Warwick Physics and find this to be a place where you are challenged and supported, stretched and fulfilled, rewarded and feel valued.

If there is anything you wish to discuss now or in the future, please feel free to come and see me.
