Dr. Tom Hase

Research Interests

I specialise in applying x-ray scattering and spectroscopy to the study of materials and joined the University of Warwick in 2006. I obtained my Ph. D. from the University of Durham for the studies of thin metallic films using x-ray reflectivity. During my subsequent post-doctoral studies I developed soft x-ray scattering for the study of magnetic materials with particular emphasis on the nature of the interface structure and its correlation with observed magnetic properties. My research interests span a wide range of materials from amorphous metals to single crystals as well as the structure of soft matter. However, magnetic materials and thin films in particular have remained my prime research focus. My recent work has included the development of medium energy x-ray scattering as well as developing new experimental strategies to explore patterned materials. I work closely with the department of materials at the University of Uppsala and conduct much of my research at central facilities including ESRF, NSLS, APS, ISIS, Diamond and BESSY.I am one of the co-directors of the XMaS beamline located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, France which is an EPSRC funded mid-range facility. I am currently a member of the ISIS facility access panels having previously sat on the ESRF and Daresbury SRS access panels.

I have a strong interest in pedagogical development and in enhancing teaching at a tertiary level. I am a committee member of the Institute of Physics Higher Education Group. At Warwick I am a member of the teaching and learning committee and director of the 1st year laboratory as well as first year undergraduate studies co-ordinator.
