Ali Mostaed


About Me

I completed my M.Sc. degree in Materials Science and Engineering at K.N Toosi University of Technology and did my thesis on fabrication and characterization of nanocomposites. I am currently working on my PhD project entitled "Structure and Bonding of Functional Oxides" under the supervision of Dr. Richard Beanland and Prof. Geetha Balakrishnan at University of Warwick. I will be investigating structure and bonding of several magnetic ternary metallic oxides using ac-STEM/ac-TEM.

Research Interests

Characterization, Atomic Resolution STEM/TEM, Quantitative STEM, Atomic Resolution EELS/EDS, Geometric Magnetic Frustration, Crystallography, Nanostructures

Major Achievements

I discovered that the detailed intensity distribution around the visible atomic columns in the ADF images is sensitive to the presence of nearby atoms of low atomic number like oxygen, even though they are not directly visible in the images. To the best of my knowledge, I, for the first time, managed to detect the oxygen columns with a distance of ~30 pm in ADF-STEM images. For more information see PRB, 95, 094431.
