    About The Talk

Physics has been hitting the headlines recently with news that particles produced at CERN may have been seen travelling faster than the speed of light... something forbidden by Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, which has become the foundation of modern physics since it was first proposed over a century ago.

The culprits are the mysterious particles known as neutrinos and it's not the first time they've been the joker in the pack.

In this special one-off Christmas Lecture we'll introduce neutrinos, learning about their exciting and colourful history and the reasons researchers are still interested in them today before moving onto the latest headline grabbing results. We'll also learn about the dire consequences such a result could have for our current theories and explore some of the wild and wonderful physics it could open up!

The talk will be aimed firmly at a general audience and no prior knowledge is assumed. Everyone is welcome!

    Speaker

Daniel Scully is a particle physicist here at the University of Warwick.

As a researcher he works on the T2K experiment: based in Japan, it uses neutrinos to probe the workings of the Universe and may also become a cross-check for the surprising CERN results.

In addition to his research Daniel is a frequent organiser and participant in the department's communication activities. Recently he has been a participant in the highly successful "I'm A Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here!" project and has also been heard talking physics on BBC Radio Coventry. He particularly enjoys delivering talks to school students to convey excitement about the wonderful things we have and can learn from particle physics.
