The Criminal Justice Centre, in conjunction with the Centre for Operational Police Research, will be hosting a superb seminar on Tuesday 10th March by two prestigious speakers. Professor Ray Bull from the University of Leicester and Professor Paul Taylor from the University of Lancaster will be giving a joint presentation on 'Interviewing Suspects'. The seminar will be held in room S0.20 and will start at 12.30. A buffet lunch will be available from 12pm in room S2.09.

Around the world the traditional method that has been used with suspects is to interrogate them using an accusatory style, often from the beginning of the interrogation. Recent research in several countries consistently demonstrates that a noteworthy proportion of guilty suspects have already decided to confess before the interview commences, and thus this traditional approach may be ‘seen’ to work for them. For other suspects, however, the available research suggests that such an approach may well not be effective. Thus, a different approach began to be adopted 20 years ago in England and Wales, which has now been adopted elsewhere (e.g. in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, parts of the USA, among others). Instead of the seeking of confessions (which may provide very little information with which to confirm their validity), this ‘new’ approach has been designed to enable suspects to provide as much relevant information as possible, the contents of which can be verified or challenged. Research and developments on how best to elicit such information and when best to disclose to suspects information known to the investigators will be described.

Prof Ray Bull is Professor of Criminal Investigation at the University of Derby and Emeritus Professor of Forensic Psychology at the University of Leicester. He has received many awards for his contribution to Psychology and Law, in particular for his work on investigative interviewing.

Prof Paul Taylor is Professor of Psychology at the University of Lancaster and Professor of Human Interaction at Twente University in The Netherlands. At Lancaster, he directs Security-Lancaster, a University-wide centre of excellence comprising ~60 staff and the latest in research and training facilities. He is also editor of the journal Legal and Criminological Psychology.

You are warmly invited to this event and we hope to see you all there.
