    Outline of work:

My research will investigate how people make judgements about the severity of their symptoms of a variety of disorders including depression and anxiety. In doing so I hope to provide support for the Decision by Sampling cognitive model of judgement. This suggests that judgements are made through a number of binary, ordinal comparisons of a target item to other similar items in a mental sample leading to a judgement in terms of the item's relative ranked position within the sample. The main implication of this research is that it can help explain inappropriate clinical help-seeking behaviour which may contribute to the under- and over-recognition of disorders.
