A direct upshot of the 2008 CRiSM workshop on composite likelihood methods is a special issue of the major international journal Statistica Sinica, with 14 new peer-reviewed papers on this topic. The special issue was edited by N Reid (U Toronto), B Lindsay (Penn State U) and K-Y Liang (Johns Hopkins U), and can be found online at

The new exit-polling techniques developed for elections in 2001 and 2005 by David Firth (in collaboration with John Curtice of Strathclyde University; see Journal of the Royal Statistical Society A, 171, 509–539 for the full details) were used again at the General Election held on 6 May 2010.

In the latest national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) the Department of Statistics had a quarter of its research activity assessed at the RAE's very highest quality level (level 4*, "Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour").
Among the top 5 ranked Statistics research groups, the Department of Statistics was one of the two largest.

The 2007 John M Chambers Statistical Software Award of the American Statistical Association is to be made to Dr Heather Turner and Professor David Firth, for their gnm package. The Chambers Award aims to encourage innovative and well-designed statistical software, and is awarded annually to one project worldwide.
