InFER2011 (Inference For Epidemic-related Risk) 28th March - 1st April 2011

InFER 2011

InFER2011 was a 5 day conference on the use of statistical inference in epidemic control and risk management. It drew together all those interested in analysing epidemic data, and using the results of those analyses to improve disease control. Through the use of statistical inference, the conference focused on bridging the gap between theoretical quantitative work on epidemics, and the data obtained from the field during disease outbreaks.

The topics covered included: Statistical inference in epidemics; Risk management; Guidance and policy; Novel applications.

Schedule

The conference programme may be downloaded here.

Workshops

Two workshops were offered as part of InFER2011. Given by Prof Philip O'Neill (University of Nottingham), the "Introduction to Bayesian Analysis for Epidemic Models" was focused towards epidemiologists and statisticians who had not yet met the methodology required for making inference on SIR-type models. The "Putting Quantitative Epidemiology into Practice" workshop was given by Kate Sharp (Animal Health), Simon Scanlan (Defra), and Ron Hsu (University of Leicester), and addressed the practicalities of data acquisition and policy implementation from the point of view of the epidemiologist.

Plenary Speakers

Prof. Leonhard Held (University of Zurich) Prof. Gavin Gibson (Heriot-Watt University) Prof. Neil Ferguson (Imperial College London)
Prof. Laura Green (University of Warwick) Prof. Martin Green (University of Nottingham) Prof. Christl Donnelly (Imperial College London)
Prof. Peter Diggle (Lancaster University) Prof. Nigel French (Massey University)

Venue

The conference was hosted in the Zeeman Building, University of Warwick. This modern building houses both the Department of Statistics and the Warwick Mathematics Institute. Accommodation was provided on campus in Radcliffe House and the Conference Park only a short walk away from the Zeeman Building.
